Fundraising Tips
![]() |
Often, a nonprofit organization such as a school, church or charity must turn to fundraising efforts to raise the money they need. If you're the leader or member of a nonprofit organization and need to raise money, check out our fundraising tips.
1. Choose a good product to sell for your fundraiser. Popular products that schools and churches turn to include candy, cheesecake, gourmet popcorn, lollipops, gift wrap, collectibles, candles, scratch cards, coupon books, and more. Some fundraising companies specialize in one particular item, while others offer many different items.
2. Learn to write a fundraising letter. A good fundraising letter can notify the community to your efforts and let them know about any products you're selling or events you're holding. Also, a fundraising letter can be a polite way to solicit donations from members of the community without going door to door. Your fundraising letter should explain who you are, why you need money, what you are doing to raise it, and how donors can send funds or get involved.
3. Try a fundraising software program to keep track of all donors and donations. These types of software programs can provide easy access to detailed information and create in-depth reports with the click of a mouse button! These programs range from the affordable to the expensive, depending on your needs.
4. If you're doing product sales, get the input of any board members or community members that are going to be involved. For example, if fundraising for a school group, get the opinions of the students and their parents before deciding on the product you want to offer. By choosing a product that people are excited about, they're more likely to make more sales.
5. Consider hiring a fundraising consultant or organization to assist you with your nonprofit's fundraising needs. Consultants can do everything from give advice to plan campaigns. They do research, provide in-depth reports and counsel you on most every aspect of running a nonprofit organization.
6. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of events when it comes to fundraising. Great fundraisers include car washes, mock casino nights, bake sales, festivals and auctions. Any event that is enticing to an entire community is great for raising funds. The more people that turn out, the more money your organization will make.
